Map of the Spirit: Diagnosis and Treatment of the Spirit with Michael Cantwell, MD

As part of the California Institute of Integral Studies Fall 2014 Public Programs, Dr. Michael F. Cantwell will be giving a lecture on Friday 10/10 and workshop on Saturday 10/11 based on his award winning book, Map of the Spirit: Diagnosis and Treatment of the Spirit.

Map of the Spirit presents a framework, developed by Dr. Cantwell, which describes human spiritual development and the process by which we construct and then live out our spiritual beliefs. According to Dr. Cantwell, all people, regardless of particular beliefs, pass through the same four stages of spiritual development-the Pre-awareness, Awareness, Commitment, and Union Stages. Blockages in this process give rise to Spiritual Stress, the spiritual roots of disease. Map of the Spirit introduces the concept of Spiritual Stress to explain how and how much spiritual issues influence our health.

The lecture involves a presentation by Dr. Cantwell of the two main concepts of Map of the Spirit: the Balance between Seeking and Resistance/Spiritual Stress and the Four Stages of Spiritual Development, and includes patient examples, presentation of Questions 1 to 7 of Map of the Spirit’s Questionnaire, and time for participants’ questions during and at the end of the lecture.

Dr. Michael F. CantwellDr. Michael Cantwell is board-certified pediatrician who sees both children and adults in his holistic medicine practice at Rising Phoenix Integrative Medicine Center, in San Francisco. He is the recipient of the 2013 USA Best Book Award for Alternative Medicine and the 2014 Eric Hoffer First Horizon Award for his book, Map of the Spirit: Diagnosis and Treatment of the Spirit.
